Yesterday I went to a debate (although I use the term loosely since I couldn’t figure out was actually being debated) on legislation and lawsuits to combat obesity. During it, I learned that manually washing dishes burns 10 calories per day. 3,500 calories results in a one pound weight gain. Therefore, not washing dishes by hand each day results in a one pound weight gain per year.
The debater went on to explain that the one pound per year weight increase is what America has been averaging for a while. Think about it: forty or fifty years of not washing dishes is a forty or fifty pound cumulative weight gain. I found this both startling and fascinating.
